Dan McGuiness is an author and illustrator based in South Australia. He began his career with the children’s graphic novel series Pilot and Huxley, which was published in multiple countries. He has illustrated books for a number of Australian authors and is currently the illustrator on the successful Hot Dog series.
He has a fun, high-energy presentation style and engages audiences by sharing his interests, his process, and his path to becoming a published author. He enjoys introducing audiences to the graphic novel format, and incorporates an interactive character creation session designed to encourage young people to be creative.
I started out working in a winery, then went to film school, and ended up working as professional wedding video editor. I worked on some feature films at the South Australian Film Corporation, but soon realised that the film industry was not for me. Next, I studied screen printing and worked as a screen printer for a couple of years. When I got bored of that, I got a job in a comic shop in Adelaide. I had the desire to create my own comic shop, and in 2016 joined forces with three friends to do just that. Currently I work in my shop, Greenlight Comics, a few days a week when I’m not writing or illustrating.
I was very sick as a child and missed a lot of primary school due to being in hospital. This made me into a reluctant reader. I love to create books that I would have liked as a child, so a lot of my work is aimed at reluctant readers.
Friendship, adventures, science fiction and monsters feature in my stories – and I always include humour.
Getting published overseas and having my stories optioned for a cartoon series in America.
Australia, USA and the UK.
Teaching kids (and adults) how awesome graphic novels are.
Maybe I’ve served you at Greenlight Comics! I also have a Youtube and Twitch channel called Hack The Dino where some friends and I talk about, and play, video games.
