Where were you born?

I was born in Geneva, Switzerland, but am French/Australian. My family came to Australia on a ship when I was 3, and and I moved back to Paris for 8 years after graduating as an architect.

What other jobs have you had?

I am still an architect and multidisciplinary designer! I’m also an educator, and currently run a design studio at UTS. I’ve served icecream but also worked in my family’s cheese factory on the South Coast of NSW.

What themes are recurring in your work?

I am very interested in place and connection…and love exploring these themes in books. I feel like my books are very Australian – and I think that’s something to do with living in France for so long, I definitely see things simultaneously as a local and as an outsider.
I’m also very interested in books that have cross generational appeal, as well as books that are compelling and beautiful objects.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I think almost every book I’ve made has been a highlight…. Seeing Alphabetical Sydney become a cultural phenomenon was pretty special. Then working with Hilary Bell to see it come alive on stage at the Opera House was an amazing experience.
Being commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW to create a picture book to commemorate the building expansion by Japanese architects SANAA was also a career highlight – combining my love of books and architecture in one beautiful project.
I’ve also loved making the trilogy of chunky little board books – Rhyme Cordial, Rhyme Hungry and Party Rhyme… 3 x silly word play books which have become a cult favourite with babies and pre-readers.
And I’m always, always thrilled to hear of kids and families connecting with my books, it feels special every time.

Where have your works been published?

In Australia, the USA and recently China.

What are you passionate about?

I really love drawing and am obsessed with David Hockney. I’m passionate about creating beautiful books that kids really connect with – that speak to the way kids see the world, and their sense of humour.

Haven’t I seen you before?

You may not have seen me, but you might have seen my work – some of my drawings have been made into massive construction hoardings, or exhibitions or even a show at the Sydney Opera House.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I love birds and especially cockatoos…
