Anita Thomas

Author, Illustrator, Inspirational Speaker, Marine Biologist, Scientist

Anita is a passionate marine biologist, storyteller, illustrator and ocean advocate who brings the wonders of the sea to life. From working with whales to restoring reefs, her talks inspire curious minds of all ages to dive into science, follow their dreams, and help protect our blue planet.

Where were you born?

I was born in Adelaide, but my heart was raised by the sea. Every spare moment, my parents would load me, my three siblings, and our dog into the old Holden Kingswood and drive to the Yorke Peninsula. At our beach shack, life was all about snorkelling, fishing, and exploring rockpools- an endless playground that sparked my lifelong fascination with the ocean.

What other jobs have you had?

My work has been eclectic but always rooted in education, ecology, and curiosity for the marine environment. I have worked at an aquarium store, studied clownfish on coral reefs at Lizard Island, co-founded the Saving Nemo Foundation, lectured at university, restored endangered oyster reefs, monitored turtles on crocodile-infested beaches in Kakadu National Park, chaired the Society for Ecological Restoration Australasia, and delivered entrepreneurship and productivity programs in schools.

What themes are recurring in your work?

My work centres around satisfying my curiosity about the sea, the wonders of ecological restoration, and the inspiring stories of people protecting our planet. I also love demystifying science through illustration, storytelling, and spending time reflecting on how amazing nature is.

What have been the highlights of your career?

There’s nothing quite like scuba diving on a reef I helped restore and seeing life return to once-barren waters — that’s magic. Publishing my debut book and seeing it inspire young readers was another surreal moment and receiving a 40-under-40 award for innovation in marine conservation was a humbling nod to nearly a decade of hard (but deeply rewarding) work.

Where have your works been published?

My book was published with Walker Books Australia, and I’ve authored numerous scientific papers that are available internationally online. Whether it’s through academic writing or storytelling for kids, I’m passionate about making science accessible.

What are you passionate about?

I’ve always had a wild curiosity for the sea. I once spent an entire day studying a dolphin that had washed ashore — completely absorbed in every detail. I believe art and science are powerful partners, and I love using illustration to tell stories about nature. I’m deeply passionate about addressing the ecological crisis we face and sharing hopeful, action-driven stories of conservation. And yes, I want every kid who dreams of being a marine biologist to know exactly how to get there.

Haven’t I seen you before?

Possibly! I’ve spoken about marine conservation on TV and radio, including a live interview on ABC News Breakfast. But more often, you’ll find me catching waves at my local surf break, scuba diving, or exploring the coastline with my kids in tow.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’m a self-declared oyster geek — they’re way cooler than people think. With blue blood, the ability to change sex, and the power to filter a bathtub of water every single day, oysters are ecological superheroes disguised as humble shellfish.
