MOTIVATIONAL
SPEAKER, AUTHOR
COMEDY WRITER & BIRD WATCHER
|
|
Growing up in outer suburban Melbourne, Sean Dooley had two great passions in life - comedy and birdwatching - both of which weren’t advisable to make too much of a noise about to your teenage peer group if you wanted to stay a part of that peer group. But the strength of these passions won out and following his heart has led Sean to have a career in one field and become a national champion in the other. |

Turning his back on a career in law, Sean became a writer for such television shows as FULL FRONTAL, COMEDY INC, HAMISH AND ANDY, THE FOOTY SHOW and ROVE. In 2001 Sean was recruited as head writer for the Singaporean Sitcom, MR KIASU and he has also performed the successful one-man shows, NICK SEED AND THE BAD CAVES and CONFESSIONS OF A BIRDWATCHER as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Sean is currently a comedy writer for the TV show SPICKS AND SPECKS.
Not wanting to pigeon-hole himself (Sorry! -ed), Sean's latest work, COOKING WITH BAZ: HOW I GOT TO KNOW MY FATHER, is nothing to do with birds. This book demonstrates Sean's ability to spin a story across a full emotional range, and develop an archetypal tale out of a very personal one.
|
In 2002, after nursing both his parents through terminal cancer, Sean took a year off to travel around Australia in an attempt to break the birdwatching record of seeing the most birds in one year. Not only was he successful in his quest, Sean documented the adventure in his first book, THE BIG TWITCH. This was followed up with another humorous book on birdwatching, ANORAKS TO ZITTING CISTICOLA: A WHOLE LOT OF STUFF ABOUT BIRDWATCHING.
It was after this that, with some time to reflect on his experiences, COOKING WITH BAZ (not about birdwatching but about the impact of his parents’ cancer on his family) could be written and published (by Allen & Unwin, 2009). Ostensibly, the work examines the role food plays in bringing a family together, and just what a family is, in contemporary Australia. |

Sean is the "go to" man in the Australian media whenever birds are in the news. Articles by Sean have appeared in The Age, Australian Geographic, The Monthly and Arena Magazine not just on birds but on topics ranging from regional politics of the South Pacific to the art of footy tipping. Sean is a frequent guest on ABC radio and can be heard on his weekly segment on radio 3RRR BIRDMAN GOES WILD. He regularly speaks to community groups, schools and conferences and has appeared on panels, workshops and comedy debates at such places as the Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane Writers Festivals, RMIT, and The Dymocks Literacy Foundation. |
With his background in comedy and performance, Sean delivers an entertaining, informative and engaging talk no matter what the topic. Sean is able to talk with ease and humour on a range of subjects including:
- THE BIG TWITCH: Part travel adventure, part nature documentary, part inspirational follow-your-dreams story with a quirky twist
- Writing comedy for stand-up, stage and television
- Book writing: how to get published, the process of writing, working with editors etc.
- Birds in your area: what you are likely to see, and what challenges they face
- Broader environmental issues - habitat clearing, climate change, water issues - particularly as they apply to wildlife |
