David McLean: Wilfred Owen – The War Poetry (VCE)

Session Info:

Wilfred Owen is more than a war poet. His verse challenged the precepts of the day; the military establishment, the church, the classical training and the social predisposition to support war.

This presentation helps students and teachers dissect specific poems from Owen’s collection. It provides an overall framework for understanding and appreciating Owen’s message and the means by which he was able to express his concern about ‘the pity’ of war. In short, he saw the whole fabric of his society crumbling.

  • Specific poems addressed
  • The use of poetic technique – imagery, sonnet form, alliteration, assonance, para-rhyme, consonance
  • The religious establishment
  • Literary conventions – the classics
  • Social convention
