David McLean: The Comparative Response

Session Info:

There are two essential components when addressing the comparative task in VCE English. One has to be well versed in the texts themselves but also in how to prepare a written response to highlight that understanding. The skills involved are quite complex but there are ways of exhibiting one’s understanding and insight where the texts are concerned.

The presentation can be dovetailed to suit the comparative texts your department has chosen and the essay writing guide enables students to see how the array of information can be organized and presented.

Topics covered:

The Texts

  • The genre and style of the authors
  • The background and setting of the texts
  • The story line and characters
  • The central issues

The comparative task

  • The similarities and differences
  • Finding parallels

The essay

  • Developing a structure response
  • Imposing your control on the essay
  • Choosing points of comparison
  • Essay writing style
  • Maximizing your knowledge and understanding
  • Transitioning between texts when writing
