Bec Kavanagh: Text Selection

Session Info:

Every year we are swamped with new trends in fiction and new genre’s that are the next big thing. It’s impossible to read everything, so what do you grab off the shelves?

I combine my roles as festival director, reviewer and freelancer with my years of experience in bookshops and working with children’s books to talk about the next big thing.

For students I offer an overview of current titles, linking them to popular genres or trends and show book trailers of particular titles or pull out points of interest to engage readers.

For staff this session can be tailored to become a text selection PD to highlight a range of current texts (primarily Australian) to include in classroom study. I highlight ways that these texts can be used in the classroom, indicate areas where they link to the Australian curriculum and suggest additional reading or websites that can be used during studies.

Topics:

The session is tailored, but some example topics include:

  • What are the new/trendy genres?
  • What’s on the way out, on the way in?
  • When the market is oversaturated with a genre (eg paranormal romance) what is worth reading in the genre and why?
  • What makes a genre?
