The Drug Education Project: Parents

Session Info:

We strongly encourage schools to hold a parent session to run in conjunction with their student sessions. Communication is a strong protective factor in reducing drug and alcohol related harm and empowering parents is crucial in this process. Our parent session covers a range of drug and alcohol related issues, accentuating positive norms and empowering parents to keep the lines of communication open. We work in conjunction with school communities to provide relevant, fact based, best practice education, with practical strategies to avoid harm.

Program Outline:

Our program is open to school collaboration to best meet the needs of the community but can include topics such as:

  • What is harm minimisation?
  • Why is harm minimisation considered “best practice” in drug education?
  • The teenage brain – Whats going on?
  • Positive social norms.
  • Alcohol and the teenage/developing brain.
  • How to start “the conversation” and how to keep the lines of communication open.
  • How working together as a family, school community and wider community supports our young people to make healthy choices.
  • What you need to know about cannabis and other drugs.
  • What’s different about parenting a teenager?
  • Strategies to keep your teenager safe while they enjoy their growing independence.
