Tim Pegler: From Loving Reading to Living Writing

Session Info:

I talk about how a love of reading led to experimenting with stories, studying creative writing at university and then a career in journalism.

I discuss the range of stories journalists cover – from cuddly animals to crime – along with new forms of journalism such as writing for the web and blogging.

I also detail my transition from telling other people’s stories as a reporter, to writing fiction as an author.

I use overheads – newspaper clippings, web screenshots and photos – to show the types of things a professional writer can tackle.

Topics:

Importance of reading widely. How creative writing at school can lead to a career. Journalism. Journalistic ethics. Storytelling as a way of changing the world. Writing for the Internet. Researching and writing a novel.
