Danielle Clode: Killers in Eden

Session Info:

Killer whales are one of the most ferocious predators in the oceans. They eat anything that moves, from the tiniest fish to the largest blue whale. They chase seals up onto the beach and treat white pointer sharks as playthings.

But for the whalers of Eden on the southern coast of New South Wales, killer whales were their friends, their partners, even their family. In a remarkable partnership spanning seventy years, the killer whales and whalers worked together to hunt baleen whales and share the spoils. The story of this unique co-operation explores just how intelligent and flexible killer whales are, and reveals that indigenous whalers were probably the reason this partnership occurred here, but nowhere else in the world.
