This workshop aims to show that’s there’s never an excuse for saying, ‘I can’t think what to write.’ Story ideas are everywhere and it’s simply a matter of looking and listening out for them.
We then explore how to take an idea and flesh it out, by focusing on the basics of a story: Characters Setting (time and place) Back story Plot Tips for good writing
I use my novels as examples of how I turned ideas into stories, along with anecdotes from my time writing for newspapers and the web.
Rather than aiming for lengthy pieces of writing, I use simple group and individual activities to prove that everyone can prepare a story outline if they stick to the basics.
This approach has worked well with a wide range of students, including male reluctant readers.
Topics:
Generating ideas. Creating characters. Thinking about plot.
