Heroes

Session Info:

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are super. Others … not so much. This session looks at heroes in all their glory, but also examines their faults. From Ancient Greek Warriors to Japanese Samurai, from Medieval Knights to Superman and beyond, we’ll look at what makes a good hero and how our grand heroic tradition informs the cartoons we watch and the comic books we read today.

Topics:

  • Greek heroes: Odysseus and Achilles
  • Japanese heroes: Miyamoto Musashi
  • Medieval heroes: the Arthurian knights (particularly Lancelot)
  • Comic Book heroes: Batman, Superman, and Wolverine
  • What is heroism, and is it still relevant today?
  • What are the different ‘types’ of hero?
  • Does might always make right?
