This session follows on from or includes a 30 minute version of Narelle’s Creation of a Picture Book Demonstration which introduces her book Leaf Tail which has a particular common plot structure and focuses specifically on the use of storyboard to plan picture books and film sequence.
Narelle also examines how picture books by other author/illustrators exhibit a similar plot structure. Students are encouraged to think of their own animal character with a problem, other animal characters and the accidental solution, following the logic of the given plot structure.
Using a storyboard template for planning twelve double-page spreads of a picture book, students map out the twelve steps of this plot as thumbnail sketches and words together. Attention is also paid to design features of the illustrations: whether they are close-ups or middle-distance, from what angle, and what they show.
Topics:
Identifying common plots Storyboarding Drawing skills Maintaining plot logic Developing a logical sequence Drawing in close-up and from various angles
