Luke Ryan: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo

Session Info:

A year of chemotherapy and radiotherapy wasn’t quite how Luke saw his year panning out when he turned 22. Especially not having already had cancer once at the age of 11. First at 11, second at 22. At 33, Luke plans on exploding at a party of friends and loved ones. Just to really drive the point home.

Obviously there’s only one thing for it when you’ve been diagnosed with your second life-threatening illness in 22 years: stand-up comedy. Adapted from his critically acclaimed Melbourne Comedy Festival show, Luke’s Got Cancer, as well as his book, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo, Luke reveals the funny side of this most serious of topics. A fascinating and moving insight into how Luke dealt with his difficult prognosis, as well as a laugh-out-loud funny tour through the sheer weirdness of being saddled with a tumour (twice!), this is more than a simple cancer story – it’s an inspiring tale of staying positive, overcoming the obstacles life throws at you and finding the best in every situation.

Topics covered

  • Finding the humour in life
  • What it means to be “normal”
  • What it’s really like to get cancer
  • Triumphing over adversity
  • Staying positive
  • Determination in the face of difficulty
