Anna Zobel: Everyone Can Draw!

Session Info:

This workshop runs through a series of drawing activities that follow the ‘copy then practice’ sequence. The workshop analyses illustrator craft and equips students to understand how visual representations contribute to understanding of a text (VCELA215, VCELY233). Where necessary, activity sheets are provided.

A typical session would include a selection of the following:
  • 30 second drawing warm-ups
  • 2-5 min warm-ups: adding hair to a bald head
  • Copying along with me as I draw different faces
  • Using a spinning wheel to generate a verb and a noun (i.e. hungry witch) and drawing that character
  • Providing a costume or prop to a willing student, who performs as a life model
  • Pulling out a sentence from ‘The Most Ungrateful Girl in the World’ and generating an accompanying illustration together
  • Designing an illustration independently

Topics covered:

  • Purpose of illustrations: the author tells, the illustrator shows
  • Nouns and verbs
  • How to uncover your unique drawing style (our ‘drawing handwriting’)
  • Why there is no such thing as being ‘naturally’ good at drawing
  • Different methods of teaching yourself how to draw
