Tommy Dassalo is a comedian, podcaster and writer. He has performed comedy around the world since he was 16 and is the co-host of The Little Dum Dum Club – one of Australia’s most successful comedy podcasts. His story of surviving cancer as a child and ending up as a comedian is poignant, inspirational and hilarious.
Tommy has appeared on ABC’s The Librarians, Sleuth 101 and Dirty Laundry Live and has written for top-rating and award-winning television shows, including Talkin’ Bout Your Generation, Spicks and Specks, The Project and You’re Skitting Me.
In 2014, he received funding from SBS through their ‘Comedy Runway’ initiative, for a comedy pilot script that he co-wrote with Tom Ballard. The completed pilot, Fully Furnished appeared online in February 2015 to wide acclaim.
Tommy is an accomplished illustrator, penning comic strips for online and illustrating routines in his stand-up. He has also written for animation, working closely with the Viskatoons studio since he was in high school – most recently contributing jokes to their Monsterchef interstitials for ABC3 and writing episode scripts for the Channel 11 series The Jar Dwellers.
I was born in Melbourne and grew up in Malvern.
I worked in a burger restaurant for many years. My main duties were flipping patties and stealing Pepsi out of the fridge when my manager wasn’t looking. I would often go straight from work to a stand-up gig, smelling like meat and hot oil.
Me making a fool out of myself in public, me bumbling my way through a situation and not realising until much later what was actually happening.
Performing at the Raw Comedy National final in front of 1,500 people when I was 18. Placing second in an international podcasting competition in 2012 and subsequently travelling to Los Angeles to do gigs. Travelling around with the Falls Festival in 2014 and getting to perform alongside some of my favourite bands.
Podcasting, illustration, comedy, the fact that we’re all just beautiful failures trying to make the best of what we’ve got. Oh, and running.
Maybe! I’ve been on Dirty Laundry Live and The Librarians. I also do stand-up gigs around the country. I get lost in the supermarket all the time too.
Yeah, I have a bunch of old furniture for sale on Gumtree that I’m looking to get rid of. Hit me up if you’re interested.
