Steve Bell is an inspirational individual who has forged his own path through life. The world’s highest and most difficult mountains are the backdrop for his vivid lessons on growing up, personal fulfillment and building a business.
I was born in London, UK.
I don’t feel as though I’ve ever had a job, but I’ve had several interests for which I’ve been fortunate enough to be paid: ski technician, Antarctic field assistant, Royal Marines Commando, high altitude mountain guide, rock climbing instructor, barista and founding director of the UK based mountaineering company, Jagged Globe. The toughest job I had was being unemployed.
Leadership keeps turning up, whether it’s leading a climbing expedition, a platoon of commandos or, most difficult of all, leading myself. Alongside this come the lessons I’ve learnt, which provide the meat of my writing efforts.
I have to go back a long way because events are so much more meaningful when you’re young. Climbing the north face of the Matterhorn when I was 18, and the Eiger at 20 got me closest to heaven. Then earning my Green Beret, leading my clients to the summit of Everest and bringing them all back down again were pretty up there. I revisit those highlights every time I talk about them – what a great job I have!
Both my books, Seven Summits and Virgin on Insanity were published in the UK. Seven Summits was also published in the USA ,Germany, Poland and The Netherlands. I’ve also had numerous articles published in magazines in the UK, Australia and USA.
When I could climb, I was passionate about sharing the mountains with others, and about my personal rock climbing which has fed my soul all my life. Now I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned to others, especially young people. When we’re gone, all we leave behind is the impression we’ve made on others, and young people stand to inherit the most.
Haha, perhaps it was on a mountaineering documentary. I participated in several before I left the UK 12 years ago. One was about how we adapt to high altitude on a Himalayan peak, the other was a rather whacky drama-documentary about climbing the highest mountain in the known universe, Olympus Mons on Mars! I did that with the actor, Brian Blessed. It was such fun.
Despite all of the above, I’m an ordinary parent with three grown up children who don’t listen to me. The irony isn’t lost on me!
Steve Bell’s presentation to our head office team has left a lasting impression. His jaw-dropping adventure stories and stunning photos provided an entertaining backdrop to his message about following your passion and living life to the full. By the time he’d finished, the room was full of freshly inspired, buzzing people – exactly what we wanted. Weeks later, we’re still talking about it and we even have one brave soul from finance hiking to Everest base camp next season.
Steve Bell presented his compelling story at our 2015 Christmas function. Wow, what a journey….told in a very unassuming and humble way. Steve had our clients on the edge of their seats. They enjoyed it so much that we’ve ordered a personalized autographed copy of his most recent book, Virgin On Insanity, for each and every client.
Everyone who attended our library sessions were really impressed with Steve’s presentation. Many connected to his internal struggles and the way he approached the hurdles life put in the way. They were really interested in his many adventures, challenges, successes and experiences and left wanting more. I would highly recommend Steve as a public speaker who is able to capture his audience and keep them for the whole session.
