Penny Woodward


Penny has been growing, writing about and photographing edible and useful plants for more than thirty years. After seven books and countless articles and talks, her passion for her subject is undiminished. She contributes regular articles and photographs to her website and to the ABC’s Organic Gardener Magazine and Essential Guides, as well as appearing on radio in gardening talk back shows.

Where were you born?

I was born in Melbourne.

What other jobs have you had?

Over the years as well as writing books, I have worked running my own nursery, for the National Trust, as a Library Officer and as a writer and horticultural editor for several magazines and papers but especially for ABCs Organic Gardener magazine, Guides, Diary andCalendar.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Growing and using edible and useful plants: herbs, vegetables and fruit. Organic gardening and sustainable living are my passions, and are what all my work is about.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I love communicating with gardeners all over Australia trough my talks, magazine articles and website but career highlights have been publishing my books and winning two awards.

Where have your books been published?

Being gardening books, my books are written for Australian conditions but they have also been released in the US and UK. I frequently publish new articles and photographs (I am an avid garden photographer!) to my website,
