Many writers have had a weird and wonderful variety of jobs. I’m no exception. Probably the oddest was a stint as Miss Florida Grapefruit Queen in a Tokyo supermarket. I even had my own golden cardboard crown and three Japanese princesses to assist me.
Stories are about people, and I love to explore the worlds and passions of people who live very different lives to mine. Their lives may be different, but their motivations and fears and desires are familiar to us all.
I had one story about an alien who learned to speak the language of Regency romances translated into Dutch. I still don’t know how they did it – unless they have a lot of Regency romances in Holland.
I’m passionate about both reading and writing and how they can take us to places we would never imagine. And I’m passionate about food too – I hate the way people talk about cake and chocolate being bad. They are good! Also dogs rate rather highly in my world.
I lived in Japan for a few years working as a translator and copywriter there. It’s a fascinating place and I’m always up for a chat about it.
