Marjory Gardner

Illustrator

Marjory Gardner has been illustrating for trade and educational books and magazines for over twenty years. Her rainbow colours and cheerful, friendly style are instantly recognizable.

Where were you born?

I was born in Kuala Lumpur, but moved to Australia with my family to begin high school.

What other jobs have you had?

After graduating from RMIT’s graphic design course I worked in the media centre at RMIT, then a couple of design studios and the Red Cross Blood Bank Publicity Department. Then finally I realized a dream and went freelance!

What themes are recurring in your work?

Animals (mostly anthropomorphised) and children having fun.

What are you passionate about?

Encouraging children to pick up a pencil to explore their creativity by writing and drawing!

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I love going out to schools and libraries to do workshops, in the city or the country. I’ve had fabulous trips to schools and Literary Festivals around Australia; it’s great to share my work and inspire kids to draw for the love of it!
