Gregory Mackay

Author, Illustrator

Gregory has been drawing cartoons since childhood, he draws comics for adults and kids alike. His latest book for children Anders and the Comet is out now from Allen and Unwin.

Where were you born?

I was born in Wollongong on the east coast of Australia. I’ve moved a fair bit since then, and call Melbourne my hometown.

What other jobs have you had?

I work in disability, reviewing quality systems. I travel all over Australia talking to people with disabilities and hopefully improving the support system for them. I also do illustration and design work.

What themes are recurring in your work?

I like to establish a connection with the reader, making them feel things along side the characters in the comic. Characters experiencing things and the audience picking up on that are a big part of my work, as is the minutiae of everyday life.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Being published in France is a highlight, as is making my book Anders and the Comet. Attending residencies and completing big projects is always inspiring.

Where have your works been published?

With Allen & Unwin here in Australia, and with The Hoochie Coochie in France. I also self publish work here too.

What are you passionate about?

Drawing and building worlds, I can see entire story lines laid out before me and bringing them to life is part of the magic of comics.

Haven’t I seen you before?

Possibly at a zine fair or in a hobby shop. Maybe at the Melbourne Writer’s Festival.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I love designing characters and making stories, I also build scale models and make short films.
