Author, Inspirational Speaker

Giulia Giuffre is the author of Primavera, an Australian-Italian memoir of childhood and family in the second half of the 20th Century. It has been described as an ‘exuberant, bittersweet encyclopaedia of life in general’.

Where were you born?

I was born in Sydney of an Italian family.

What other jobs have you had?

Apart from my academic career lecturing in English literature at various universities including Oxford, Yale, Sydney and Wollongong, I have had numerous unlikely jobs – selling candles, pet food and books; medical receptionist, antique dealer, real estate agent…

What themes are recurring in your work?

Reading and writing as life tools. The nature of women’s experience. Notions of what is valuable in life, especially the importance of love. The child’s world. Literature matters and art gives sustenance. Play humour and laughter – why it is vital in both life and letters. Creative and re-creative writing. Family life.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Gaining my Oxford doctorate. Successfully writing and publishing Primavera after working on it for twenty years or so.
