Chrissie Perry

Chrissie is the author of over thirty books for Children and Young Adults, including thirteen books in the popular Go Girl series and the award winning Whisper. Her work has been published in ten countries. The first two books in her middle fiction series Penelope Perfect : Project Best Friend and Very Private List for Camp Success were released in Australia in 2015 and have already been acquired by Simon and Shuster, North America. Chrissie lives in St Kilda with her husband, three children who are stubbornly refusing to stay young and an opinionated Maltese Shih Tzu called Gidget.

Like Penelope from her new series, Chrissie believes it’s great to aim for excellence. But she also has a sneaking suspicion that going with the flow every now and then can work out just fine.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Most of my books have a strong emphasis on social and emotional intelligence. The huge and continuing success of the Go Girl! series is largely because kids love to have their circumstances and emotions explored and validated. The Penelope Perfect series has a main character who is more Hermione Granger than Harry Potter. Finally, it’s the (slightly) anxious but very funny kid who comes to the fore.

Where have your works been published?

Including my YA titles, Whisper and Outside In, my books have been published in the UK, Canada, Turkey, Slovenia, Brazil, Argentina, the Czech Republic, New Zealand and soon to be in the USA.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I also write books for older audiences under the name Chrissie Keighery, (my maiden name).

There is a new addition to the Penelope Perfect series on the way – Lucky Jars and Broken Promises comes out December 1, 2015!

Chrissie is a warm and approachable presenter who was extremely flexible throughout the entire process of planning the workshops through to their delivery. She adjusted the delivery easily between the three separate workshops done at the College in order to connect with the students at their age level. We have quite a few aspiring authors and Chrissie was able to give them valuable advice about getting started in the world of publishing fiction. I would highly recommend Chrissie as a presenter in the field of creative writing

—Andrea G-O, Senior English Teacher and Year 8 Coordinator, Genesis Christian College, Brisbane

The workshop was incredible; it is aiding in keeping my writing vision alive. I learned to not give up on a character and to continue seeking inspiration for the direction of a plot. I’m very grateful for the time that she spent with us and the invaluable information we each received. Thank you!

—Rachel (Year 11) Genesis Christian College

It was really interesting to get an insight into the process of writing a novel and to improve my creative writing skills. I look forward to applying what I learned at the workshop and becoming a better writer because of it.

—Daniel (Year 9 Extension), Genesis Christian College

Chrissie helped me to understand how to create an interesting character that people can relate to and that isn’t stereotypical. She also taught me about dialogue and how to show the characters personality through dialogue. It was very fun and I would love to have her back.

—Tiffany Partridge (Year 8), Genesis Christian College

Please do make Penelope Perfect into a TV series. But can you make sure it’s on free to air, because I don’t have Foxtel.

—Year 4 student, St Michaels Grammar

Thank you for the wonderful visit Chrissie. You have created a real buzz in the school.

—Helen Otway, Principal, St Albans Heights Primary
