Bernie regularly runs workshops for teachers and writers, describing himself as a Storyteller, Writer, Educator. He frequently visits schools and talks to students in schools about writing stories and living stories. His own story is inspirational. Where were you born?

Mercy Hospital Melbourne where they used a block and tackle to deliver my eleven pound head.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Kids who lose a parent, characters who don’t speak, and explosions.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Getting published. I was really dumb at school so that was way cool.

I’m a frequent contributor to The Monthly magazine and The Age and The Australian newspapers. I’ve also had stories published in Good Weekend, Meanjin, and The Best Australian Stories.

What are you passionate about?

The stories that keep young people alive.
