Anna Barnes is an award winning writer and playwright. Her plays and monologues have been performed around Australia and in 2011 she was Red Stitch Actors Theatre’s writer-in-residence (VIC). In 2012 her first book, a non-fiction book for girls, Girl! The Ultimate Guide to Being You, was published by Penguin Australia.
I’ve had a heap of weird jobs. My first job was as a cleaner at an orthodontist when I was in year eight. I was put in this small room and they would push trays of bloodied instruments through this slot in the wall for me to sterilise. It was a delightfully gory entry into paid employment. When I was living in London I worked at the Guinness World Records. My job was to watch the Guinness World Records TV shows and make youtube clips out of the record attempts. You wouldn’t believe the amount of watermelons I’ve seen smashed in half by a human head.
Getting the first letter from a reader of my book was pretty amazing. It made me feel like Beatrix Potter and One Direction rolled into one. So yeah, it was awesome. Winning British Council’s Realise Your Dream award to attend Royal Court Theatre’s writing course was also pretty special.
My first book, Girl! The Ultimate Guide to Being You was published by Penguin Australia in July 2012. I have a regular column about celebrity culture in the bi-monthly arts journal The Lifted Brow. During the 2010 Melbourne Writers’ Festival I was a featured blogger on the ABC’s book show radio program. I have also had my plays and monologues performed around Australia and in the UK.
Social justice issues. Equality. Lolcats.
Yup. I was in the audience of an episode of the ABC kids TV show The Big Square Eye in 1993. I get recognised ALL THE TIME.
