Amie Kaufman is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. Her books have been published in fifteen countries, won numerous awards, and are currently in development for TV. She writes full time from her home in Melbourne, but loves to get out of the house and meet readers!
I was born in Melbourne, but with an Irish mother who transplanted here for love, I spent a lot of time traveling back and forth between Australia and Ireland. To this day I fall asleep the second I get on a plane. It’s a very useful skill to have!
I’ve been a nanny, a court transcript typist (super fast typing speed also great for writing novels!) and I worked for several years as a mediator. I actually did a Masters in Conflict Resolution, and I still love teaching mediation and occasionally taking one on. Bringing people together to have a conversation where one hasn’t been possible before is very rewarding!
I love writing about characters from two completely different worlds—whether they’re rich and poor, rebel and soldier, or (since my books are set in space) literally from two different worlds. I love exploring the question of how much that history defines us, and how far it’s open to us to create our own path in life.
Learning my series had hit the New York Times bestseller list was a huge thrill—I was on tour at the time, and when I got an urgent phone call to my hotel room, I assumed something terrible must have happened! I burst into tears, then cleaned myself up and went off to that night’s event. I’ve also been really proud to see my books win an Aurealis Award and be shortlisted for Australia’s Gold Inky Award, as these particular awards are judged by my industry peers, and by Aussie teens—receiving recognition from those groups means a lot.
I’ve also had some incredibly rewarding moments teaching workshops, working with young writers, and receiving fan mail from readers—knowing you’ve managed to take a story or idea from your head and transplant it into someone else’s is as close as we can get to telepathy.
So far, my books have been published in the United States, the UK, France, Portugal, Brazil, Poland, Taiwan, Russia, Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Germany, Spain, and of course Australia and New Zealand.
I just wanted to send through a big thank you to Amie for coming out and speaking during our youth event this month. Amie really added an extra spark to the event and we were lucky enough to have a really good crowd for Amie to engage with.
